Some Of The Famous Seminaries In Goa

Pilar Seminary : The Portuguese built four seminaries in Goa, only two which survive today. Of these two, on is the famous Rachol Seminary which once housed the Christian Art Museum. The other surviving Seminary is at Pilar, which lies near the village of Goa Velha, where the magnificent Procession of Saints takes place on the Monday of Holy Week.Set on a small hill just south of the capital city of Panaji, the Pilar Seminary is worth visiting for its quiet ambience, the small but interesting one-room museum and the spectacular views of the countryside from its location. Rachol Seminary: Rachol is about 7 kms from the commercial town of Margao, in Salcette taluka. This grand institution has been in active service from its inception in 1580, taking into its stride over the years, constant threats from Muslim and Hindu marauders from the neighboring kingdoms. Initially, the complex built by the Jesuits between 1606 and 1610, consisted of a hospital and a school for the poor besides the college for the trainee priests. It also housed what was only the third setup of a printing press in the subcontinent.

The Seminary has a church built in 1576, dedicated to Saint Ignatius Loyola - the founder of the Jesuit order, which remains in excellent condition. Inside the church, there is a uniformed statue of Saint Constantine (the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity), on the richly carved and gilded main altarpiece. It is said that fragments of his bones, brought from Rome in 1782 are enshrined here along with a small glass vial which once contained a little amount of the Saint´s blood. Behind the altar is an exquisitely carved statue of infant Jesus called "Menino Jesus", which was brought from the African colonies by a Jesuit priest for installation in his Colva church.

The spring is very famous and popular among the locals and the bathers who come from other places, Spring consists some medicinal properties in its waters.

The Tourism Department has designated the as a tourist spot. The spring is at its best, during the monsoon when it tumbles forward in a dashing cascade. Kesarval, with its rolling terraced hills, running down to the forested countryside is a place where time stands still. 

Mayem Lake

Mayem Lake is also Known as the Maya Lake. It is the most famous Lake situated in North Goa and surrounded with green Hills in Bicholim Taluka. The Mayem Lake is all around surrounded by Low as well as High Hills.

Birdlife is plentiful here, lake gives you a great chance to admire a variety of birds, making their home on the shores of the lake. Birds like Pheasant Tailed Jacana, Comb Duck, Herons, Egrets,  Pygmy Goose, etc can be seen here.
